Frequently Asked Questions
What are 3D castings?
3D castings are created by using a high quality, hypo-allergenic seaweed based material that is safe with skin contact. A mold will be taken with you and then later on back at my studio I fill it with a high quality stone. I use stone instead of plaster, giving them a better quality and stronger casting with amazing details.
There are two different ways to make a casting. One is a bucket DUNK where the client places their hand/hands into the wet product until it sets. The second way is the FLAT casting where the product is poured over the holding hands and covered with layers of casting strips. Flat castings do require a longer setting rime. This usually requires 30 minutes for people to remain sitting still. This is not the best for little children. Infants to little children can have an individual dunk casting done and set them in the inside of the wreath casting for display.
For infants I adjust the product to set about 2-3 minutes. For adults, longer time is closer to 5 minutes to set. The time difference is that with larger or multiple hands more product is being prepared needing more time to mix and insert hands. Babies need to be fed and rested or sleeping during castings. If baby is upset, they move around too much and the mold will be ruined.
Where will the castings be done?
I will travel to homes, or businesses of convenience. For hospice and bereavement I travel to the place of business.
How long will it take to get the castings back?
This mostly depends on how many castings are being made and the weather. If it’s more humid weather, the times will be longer. Castings are usually back to clients in 2-3 weeks. Castings can’t be too rushed as time is needed for water to dry out of the stone.
How is payment taken and when is it due?
I ask that 100% of payment is made during the initial casting session. This way I am not stuck holding on to castings for a long period of time waiting for final payment. Payment is being taken by Venmo, cash or cash app.
Can copies of castings be made?
Only on rare occasions will duplicates be able to be made. If the casting has already been mounted, then copies can not be made. So, it is best to be sure of how many castings you want to have done at appointment.
